Man facing charges in crash in Santa Teresa that left 2 dead, 10 injured

SANTA TERESA, NM – A man from Mexico is facing multiple charges following a collision near the border that left two people dead and 10 others injured last week, according to the Las Cruces Sun News.

The incident started on State Road 9 near mile marker 146 at around 5 a.m. Wednesday, when a Border Patrol agent attempted to perform a traffic stop on an eastbound 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe allegedly being driven by 19-year-old Ciudad Juárez resident Julio Garcia Rascon.

A pursuit ensued, and at some point, the agent lost the vehicle. The Tahoe then crashed into a pole at the intersection of McNutt and Airport Roads.

Two passengers, 24-year-old Jorge Garcia-Vazquez and 18-year-old Guadalupe Cruze-Vazquez, both from Mexico, were ejected during the crash. They died at the scene.

Garcia Rascon and nine other passengers were taken to the hospital in El Paso, some of them via medical helicopter.

According to the Mexican Consulate, nine of the injured were Mexican citizens.

Garcia Rascon is facing multiple charges, including reckless driving, two counts of vehicular homicide, and 10 counts of great vehicular bodily injury.
